Hindu Temples are among the most recognizable symbols of Sanatan Dharma. More then just place of worship, temples serve as centers of spirituality, culture, education and community life. For thousands of years, they preserved religious traditions, inspires magnificent art and agriculture and provided a sacred space where devotees can connect with the Divine.
Temple Architecture
The design of Hindu temple is not random. Every part of the temple has a meaning and is built to create a spiritual atmosphere. At the center of the temple is the Garbhagriha, which means Womb Chamber. This is the most sacred part of the temple where the main deity is placed. Devotees move towards this area to offer prayers and seek blessings. Over time, different regions of India developed different styles of temple architecture.
Nagara Style: The Nagara Style is mainly found in North Parts of India. These temples usually have a tall tower called a 'Shikhara' above the sanctum. A famous example is the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi.
Dravida Style: The Dravida Style is commonly found in South Parts of India. These temples are known for their large entrance towers called Gopurams and beautiful carvings. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is one of the best examples of this style.
Vesara Style: The Vesara Style combines features of the both Nagara and Dravida architecture. It is found mainly in parts of Karnataka and nearby regions. Many temples built during the Chalukya and Hoysala periods follow this style.
(Ancient temple builders followed guidelines from texts called the Shilpa Shastras. There texts explained how temples should be designed so that they reflected balance, harmony and spiritual values.)
