बृह॑स्पते प्रथ॒मं वा॒चो अग्रं॒ यत्प्रैर॑त नाम॒धेयं॒ दधा॑नाः । यदे॑षां॒ श्रेष्ठं॒ यद॑रि॒प्रमासी॑त्प्रे॒णा तदे॑षां॒ निहि॑तं॒ गुहा॒विः ॥ (१)

हे बृहस्पति! बच्चे सबसे पहले पदार्थो का नाम मात्र जानते हैं. यह उनकी भाषा की पहली सीढ़ी है. बालकों का जो पापरहित वेदार्थ ज्ञान है, वह गुहा में छिपा हुआ रहता है. वह ज्ञान सरस्वती की कृपा से प्रकट होता है. (१)
EN English Translation
O Jupiter! Children first know the name of the substance. This is the first ladder of their language. The divine Vedic knowledge of children remains hidden in the them. That knowledge is manifested by the grace of Saraswati. (1)
सक्तु॑मिव॒ तित॑उना पु॒नन्तो॒ यत्र॒ धीरा॒ मन॑सा॒ वाच॒मक्र॑त । अत्रा॒ सखा॑यः स॒ख्यानि॑ जानते भ॒द्रैषां॑ ल॒क्ष्मीर्निहि॒ताधि॑ वा॒चि ॥ (२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जिस प्रकार सत्तू वाले भुने हुए जौ सूप से शुद्ध किए जाते हैं, उसी प्रकार विद्वान् लोग मन में विचार करके शुद्ध भाषा बोलते हैं. उस समय विद्वान् लोग मित्रताओं को जानते हैं. इनके वचनों में मंगलकारिणी लक्ष्मी छिपी रहती हैं. (२)
EN English Translation
Just as roasted barleys with sattu are purified with soup, scholars speak pure language by thinking in the mind. Scholars at that time know friendships. Mangalkarini Lakshmi is hidden in his words. (2)
य॒ज्ञेन॑ वा॒चः प॑द॒वीय॑माय॒न्तामन्व॑विन्द॒न्नृषि॑षु॒ प्रवि॑ष्टाम् । तामा॒भृत्या॒ व्य॑दधुः पुरु॒त्रा तां स॒प्त रे॒भा अ॒भि सं न॑वन्ते ॥ (३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
बुद्धिमान् मनुष्य यज्ञ के द्वारा भाषा का मार्ग जानते हैं. उन्होंने ऋषियों के मन में प्रविष्ट वाणी को जान लिया है. उस भाषा को प्राप्त करके उन्होंने अनेक देशों में फैलाया. सातों छंद इसी भाषा में एकत्र होते हैं. (३)
EN English Translation
Wise men know the way of language through yajna. He has come to know the voice that entered the minds of the sages. Having acquired that language, he spread it to many countries. The seven verses are collected in this language. (3)
उ॒त त्वः॒ पश्य॒न्न द॑दर्श॒ वाच॑मु॒त त्वः॑ शृ॒ण्वन्न शृ॑णोत्येनाम् । उ॒तो त्व॑स्मै त॒न्वं१॒॑ वि स॑स्रे जा॒येव॒ पत्य॑ उश॒ती सु॒वासाः॑ ॥ (४)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
कुछ लोग मन से विचार करके भी भाषा को नहीं समझ पाते. कुछ लोग भाषा को सुनकर भी नहीं सुनते. किसी किसी के सामने भाषा अपने शरीर को इस प्रकार विसर्जित कर देती है, जिस प्रकार शोभन वस्त्रों वाली एवं पति की कामना करने वाली नारी पति के सामने अपने शरीर को प्रदर्शित करती है. (४)
EN English Translation
Some people do not understand the language even after thinking with their mind. Some people don't even listen to the language. In front of someone, language immerses her body in such a way that a woman with adornment robes and wishes for a husband displays her body in front of the husband. (4)
उ॒त त्वं॑ स॒ख्ये स्थि॒रपी॑तमाहु॒र्नैनं॑ हिन्व॒न्त्यपि॒ वाजि॑नेषु । अधे॑न्वा चरति मा॒ययै॒ष वाचं॑ शुश्रु॒वाँ अ॑फ॒लाम॑पु॒ष्पाम् ॥ (५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
किसी-किसी को विद्वानों की मंडली में उत्तम भावग्रहण करने वाले के रूप में प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त होती है. इनकी किसी भी कार्य में उपेक्षा नहीं की जाती. कुछ लोग फल और पुष्परहित वाणी की सेवा करते हैं. इनकी वाणी वास्तविक धेनु नहीं, अपितु मायारूपिणी धेनु है. (५)
EN English Translation
Some people have a reputation as a recipient of the best impression in the circle of scholars. They are not neglected in any work. Some people serve fruitless and floral voice. His voice is not the real Dhenu, but mayarupini Dhenu. (5)
यस्ति॒त्याज॑ सचि॒विदं॒ सखा॑यं॒ न तस्य॑ वा॒च्यपि॑ भा॒गो अ॑स्ति । यदीं॑ शृ॒णोत्यल॑कं शृणोति न॒हि प्र॒वेद॑ सुकृ॒तस्य॒ पन्था॑म् ॥ (६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जो वेद पढ़ने वाला, मित्र को जानने वाले मित्र को त्याग देता है, उसकी वाणी में कोई सार नहीं होता. वह पुरुष जो भी सुनता है, व्यर्थ सुनता है. वह सत्कर्म का मार्ग नहीं जानता. (६)
EN English Translation
The one who reads the Vedas, who forsakes the friend who knows the friend, has no substance in his speech. Whatever the man hears, he hears in vain. He does not know the way of good deeds. (6)
अ॒क्ष॒ण्वन्तः॒ कर्ण॑वन्तः॒ सखा॑यो मनोज॒वेष्वस॑मा बभूवुः । आ॒द॒घ्नास॑ उपक॒क्षास॑ उ त्वे ह्र॒दा इ॑व॒ स्नात्वा॑ उ त्वे ददृश्रे ॥ (७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
आंखों और कानों वाले मित्र मन का भाव प्रकाशित करने में अद्वितीय होते हैं. कुछ लोग कमर तक गहरे तालाब के समान, कुछ मुख तक गहरे तालाब के समान एवं कुछ स्नान करने योग्य तालाबों के समान दिखाई देते हैं. (७)
EN English Translation
Friends with eyes and ears are unique in illuminating the sense of mind. Some people look like a pond deep to the waist, some like a pond deep to the mouth, and some like bathing ponds. (7)
हृ॒दा त॒ष्टेषु॒ मन॑सो ज॒वेषु॒ यद्ब्रा॑ह्म॒णाः सं॒यज॑न्ते॒ सखा॑यः । अत्राह॑ त्वं॒ वि ज॑हुर्वे॒द्याभि॒रोह॑ब्रह्माणो॒ वि च॑रन्त्यु त्वे ॥ (८)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जिस समय समान ज्ञान वाले अनेक ब्राह्मण हृदय द्वारा समझे जाने वाले वेदार्थ के गुणदोष पर विचार करने पर एकत्र होते हैं, उस समय किसी-किसी को विशेष ज्ञान होता है एवं कोई कोई स्तोत्र का अर्थ जानकर घूमते हैं. (८)
EN English Translation
At the time when many Brahmins with the same knowledge gather to consider the merits of the Vedas understood by the heart, at that time, some have special knowledge and some walk around knowing the meaning of a hymn. (8)
इ॒मे ये नार्वाङ्न प॒रश्चर॑न्ति॒ न ब्रा॑ह्म॒णासो॒ न सु॒तेक॑रासः । त ए॒ते वाच॑मभि॒पद्य॑ पा॒पया॑ सि॒रीस्तन्त्रं॑ तन्वते॒ अप्र॑जज्ञयः ॥ (९)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
ये अविद्वान् लोग इस लोक में वेद को जानने वाले ब्राह्मणों द्वारा एवं परलोकवासी देवों के साथ यज्ञकर्म का आचरण नहीं करते. वे न तो स्तोता हैं और न सोमयज्ञ करने वाले हैं. ये पाप का आश्रय लेने वाली लौकिक वाणी से युक्त होकर मूर्ख के समान हल चलाते हुए कृषिकर्म करते हैं. (९)
EN English Translation
These undefeated people do not practice yajnakarma in this loka by the Brahmins who know the Vedas and with the gods of the hereafter. They are neither stotas nor somayagna doers. They do agricultural work by running a solution like a fool, with the proverbial voice that takes refuge in sin. (9)
सर्वे॑ नन्दन्ति य॒शसाग॑तेन सभासा॒हेन॒ सख्या॒ सखा॑यः । कि॒ल्बि॒ष॒स्पृत्पि॑तु॒षणि॒र्ह्ये॑षा॒मरं॑ हि॒तो भव॑ति॒ वाजि॑नाय ॥ (१०)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
मित्र के समान आचरण करने वाले एवं सभा में यश प्रदान करने वाले यश को पाकर प्रसन्न होते हैं. यश के कारण पाप दूर होता है. अन्न मिलता है एवं शक्ति प्राप्त होती है. इस प्रकार यश से अनेक प्रकार का हित होता है. (१०)
EN English Translation
Those who behave like a friend and give success in the meeting are happy to have success. Because of fame, sin is removed. Food is obtained and strength is obtained. Thus, yash has many kinds of interests. (10)
ऋ॒चां त्वः॒ पोष॑मास्ते पुपु॒ष्वान्गा॑य॒त्रं त्वो॑ गायति॒ शक्व॑रीषु । ब्र॒ह्मा त्वो॒ वद॑ति जातवि॒द्यां य॒ज्ञस्य॒ मात्रां॒ वि मि॑मीत उ त्वः ॥ (११)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
कुछ होता अनेक ऋचाओं का उच्चारण करते हुए यज्ञ में सहायक होते हैं एवं कुछ लोग गायत्री छंद में साममंत्रों को गाते हैं. ब्रह्मा नामक पुरोहित प्रायश्चित्त की व्याख्या करता है एवं अध्वर्यु यज्ञ में विविध कार्य करता है. (११)
EN English Translation
Some are helpful in the yajna by uttering many verses and some people sing the sammantras in the Gayatri verses. A priest named Brahma explains atonement and performs various functions in the Adhwaryu Yajna. (11)
