स॒हस्र॑शीर्षा॒ पुरु॑षः सहस्रा॒क्षः स॒हस्र॑पात् । स भूमि॑ꣳ स॒र्वत॑ स्पृ॒त्वाऽत्य॑तिष्ठद्दशाङ्गु॒लम् ॥ (१)

परम पुरुष हजारों सिर वाला, हजारों नेत्रों वाला व हजारों पैर वाला है. वह परम पुरुष सारे ब्रह्मांड को घेर कर भी दस अंगुली ऊपर अधिष्ठित है. (१)
EN English Translation
The supreme man is thousands of heads, thousands of eyes and thousands of legs. That supreme man surrounds the entire universe and is installed above ten fingers. (1)
पुरु॑षऽए॒वेदꣳ सर्वं॒ यद्भू॒तं यच्च॑ भाव्यम् । उ॒तामृ॑त॒त्वस्येशा॑नो॒ यदन्ने॑नाति॒रोह॑ति ॥ (२)

जो हो चुका है और जो होने वाला है वह परम पुरुष ही है. वह अमरता का स्वामी है. जो अन्न से बढ़ोतरी पाते हैं, उन के भी वही स्वामी हैं. (२)
EN English Translation
What has happened and what is going to happen is the supreme man. He is the master of immortality. He is also the master of those who grow from food. (2)
ए॒तावा॑नस्य महि॒मातो॒ ज्यायाँ॑श्च॒ पूरु॑षः । पादो॑ऽस्य॒ विश्वा॑ भू॒तानि॑ त्रि॒पाद॑स्या॒मृतं॑ दि॒वि ॥ (३)

परम पुरुष अत्यंत महिमावान है. इस के चरणों में सभी प्राणी हैं. इस का एक भाग पृथ्वी पर है, जिस में सब प्राणी हैं और तीन भाग स्वर्गलोक में स्थित हैं. (३)
EN English Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is very glorious. At the feet of this are all beings. One part of this is on earth, in which all beings are and three parts are located in paradise. (3)
त्रि॒पादू॒र्ध्व उदै॒त्पुरु॑षः॒ पादो॑ऽस्ये॒हाभ॑व॒त् पुनः॑ । ततो॒ विष्व॒ङ् व्यक्रामत्साशनानश॒नेऽअ॒भि ॥ (४)

परम पुरुष के तीन पैर ऊर्ध्वलोक में समाए हुए हैं. एक भाग में इहलोक समाहित है. जड़, चेतन सभी इस के इस पैर में समाहित हैं. (४)
EN English Translation
The three legs of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are embedded in the vertical world. One part contains this world. The root, the conscious are all contained in this leg of this. (4)
ततो॑ वि॒राड॑जायत वि॒राजो॒ऽअधि॒ पूरु॑षः । स जा॒तोऽअत्य॑रिच्यत प॒श्चाद् भूमि॒मथो॑ पु॒रः ॥ (५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
उस परम पुरुष से विराट् उपजा. विराट् से सृष्टि उपजी. उस से भूमि पैदा हुई फिर जीव पैदा हुए. (५)
EN English Translation
Huge stems from that Supreme Man. Creation stems from the universe. From that the land was born and then the creatures were born. (5)
तस्मा॑द्य॒ज्ञात् स॑र्व॒हुतः॒ सम्भृ॑तं पृषदा॒ज्यम् । प॒शूँस्ताँश्च॑क्रे वाय॒व्यानार॒ण्या ग्रा॒म्याश्च॒ ये ॥ (६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
उस विराट् के यज्ञ से घी प्राप्त हुआ, जिस से सब को आहुति दी जाती है. उसी विराट् से पक्षी, पशु, गांव के जीव, जानवर उपजे. (६)
EN English Translation
Ghee was obtained from the sacrifice of that great man, from which everyone is sacrificed. Birds, animals, village animals, animals were born from the same vast sky. (6)
तस्मा॑द्य॒ज्ञात् स॑र्व॒हुत॒ऽऋचः॒ सामा॑नि जज्ञिरे । छन्दा॑सि जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा॒द्यजु॒स्तस्मा॑दजायत ॥ (७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
उस विराट् यज्ञ रूपी पुरुष से ऋग्वेद प्रकटा. उसी से सामवेद प्रकटा. उसी से यजुर्वेद प्रकट हुआ. उसी से अथर्ववेद का प्रादुर्भाव हुआ. (७)
EN English Translation
The RigVeda appeared from that great yajna-like man. From that, samaveda appears. From that yajurveda appeared. From that, atharvaveda originated. (7)
तस्मा॒दश्वा॑ऽअजायन्त॒ ये के चो॑भ॒याद॑तः । गावो॑ ह जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा॒त् तस्मा॑ज्जा॒ताऽअ॑जा॒वयः॑ ॥ (८)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
उसी विराट् यज्ञ रूपी पुरुष से दोनों ओर दांतों वाले जीव उपजे. उसी से घोड़े उपजे. उसी से बकरियां उपजी. उसी से भेड़ आदि उपजे. (८)
EN English Translation
From the same great yajna-like man, creatures with teeth on both sides were born. Horses came from it. Goats grew from it. Sheep etc. were grown from it. (8)
तं य॒ज्ञं ब॒र्हिषि॒ प्रौक्ष॒न् पुरु॑षं जा॒तम॑ग्र॒तः । तेन॑ दे॒वाऽअ॑यजन्त सा॒ध्याऽऋष॑यश्च॒ ये ॥ (९)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
सब से पहले यज्ञ से बाहर आए उस पुरुष को पूजा. उसी से देवताओं, ऋषियों और साधकों ने यज्ञ को उपजाया. (९)
EN English Translation
First of all, worship that man who came out of the yagna. From that, the gods, sages and seekers raised the yajna. (9)
यत्पुरु॑षं॒ व्यद॑धुः कति॒धा व्य॑कल्पयन् । मुखं॒ किम॑स्यासी॒त् किं बा॒हू किमू॒रू पादा॑ऽउच्येते ॥ (१०)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
संकल्प से प्रकटे विराट् पुरुष का ज्ञानीजन भांतिभांति से वर्णन करते हैं. उस का मुख क्या है? बाहु क्या है? जांघ कौन सी है? पांव क्या कहे जाते हैं. (१०)
EN English Translation
The wise describe the great man manifested with resolve in a manner. What is his face? What is bahu? Which is the thigh? What are feet called? (10)
ब्रा॒ह्म॒णोऽस्य॒ मुख॑मासीद् बा॒हू रा॑ज॒न्यः कृ॒तः । ऊ॒रू तद॑स्य॒ यद्वैश्यः॑ प॒द्भ्या शू॒द्रोऽअ॑जायत ॥ (११)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
ब्राह्मण विराट् पुरुष का मुंह हुए. क्षत्रिय उस की भुजाएं हुए. वैश्य उस की जंघाएं हुई. शूद्र उस के पैर हुए. (११)
EN English Translation
Brahmins were the mouth of virat purush. Kshatriyas were his arms. Vaishya he had thighs. Shudras were his feet. (11)
च॒न्द्रमा॒ मन॑सो जा॒तश्चक्षोः॒ सूर्यो॑ऽअजायत । श्रोत्रा॑द्वा॒युश्च॑ प्रा॒णश्च॒ मुखा॑द॒ग्निर॑जायत ॥ (१२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
विराट् पुरुष के मन से चंद्रमा, आंखों से सूर्य, कान से वायु और मुख से अग्नि उत्पन्न हुई. (१२)
EN English Translation
The moon was born from the mind of the great man, the sun from the eyes, the air from the ear and agni from the mouth. (12)
नाभ्या॑ऽआसीद॒न्तरि॑क्षꣳ शी॒र्ष्णो द्यौः सम॑वर्त्तत । प॒द्भयां भूमि॒र्दिशः॒ श्रोत्रा॒त्तथा॑ लो॒काँ२ऽअ॑कल्पयन् ॥ (१३)

परम पुरुष की नाभि से अंतरिक्ष प्रकट हुआ. परम पुरुष के सिर से स्वर्गलोक प्रकट हुआ. परम पुरुष के पैर से भूमि प्रकट हुई. परम पुरुष के कानों से दिशाएं प्रकट हुई. परम पुरुष ने अनेक लोक रचे हैं. (१३)
EN English Translation
Space appeared from the navel of the supreme man. Heaven appeared from the head of the Supreme Man. The ground appeared from the feet of the supreme man. Directions appeared from the ears of the supreme man. The Supreme Man has created many worlds. (13)
यत्पुरु॑षेण ह॒विषा॑ दे॒वा य॒ज्ञमत॑न्वत । व॒स॒न्तोऽस्यासी॒दाज्यं॑ ग्री॒ष्मऽइ॒ध्मः श॒रद्ध॒विः ॥ (१४)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
देवताओं ने परम पुरुष को हवि माना. परम पुरुष को हवि मान कर यज्ञ की शुरुआत की. उस यज्ञ में घी वसंत ऋतु, ईधन ग्रीष्म ऋतु एवं हवि शरद ऋतु हो गई. (१४)
EN English Translation
The gods considered the Supreme Man to be Havi. In that yajna, ghee became spring, fuel summer season and havi autumn. (14)
स॒प्तास्या॑सन् परि॒धय॒स्त्रिः स॒प्त स॒मिधः॑ कृ॒ताः । दे॒वा यद्य॒ज्ञं॑ त॑न्वा॒नाऽअब॑ध्न॒न् पुरु॑षं प॒शुम् ॥ (१५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
देवताओं ने जिस यज्ञ का विस्तार किया, उस यज्ञ में परम पुरुष को ही हवि के पशु के रूप में बांधा, उस यज्ञ में सात परिधियां और इक्कीस समिधाएं हुई. (१५)
EN English Translation
In the yajna that the gods expanded, in that yajna, the Supreme Man was tied as the animal of Havi, in that yajna, there were seven paridhis and twenty-one samidhas. (15)
य॒ज्ञेन॑ य॒ज्ञम॑यजन्त दे॒वास्तानि॒ धर्मा॑णि प्रथ॒मान्या॑सन् । ते ह॒ नाकं॑ महि॒मानः॑ सचन्त॒ यत्र॒ पूर्वे॑ सा॒ध्याः सन्ति॑ दे॒वाः ॥ (१६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
देवताओं ने यज्ञ से यज्ञ किया. उस में धर्म को प्रथम आसन प्राप्त हुआ. जो लोग यज्ञ आदि विधिविधान से जीवन जीते हैं, ऐसे जीवन साधक महिमाशाली होते हैं. ऐसे व्यक्ति स्वर्ग प्राप्त करते हैं. (१६)
EN English Translation
The gods performed yajna with yajna. In that, religion got the first seat. Those who live life by yagya etc. methods, such life seekers are glorious. Such people attain heaven. (16)
अ॒द्भ्यः सम्भृ॑तः पृथि॒व्यै रसा॑च्च वि॒श्वक॑र्मणः॒ सम॑वर्त्त॒ताग्रे॑ । तस्य॒ त्वष्टा॑ वि॒दध॑द् रू॒पमे॑ति॒ तन्मर्त्य॑स्य देव॒त्वमा॒जान॒मग्रे॑ ॥ (१७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
परम पुरुष ने सब से पहले जल का निर्माण किया. तत्पश्चात पृथ्वी का निर्माण किया. इस पृथ्वी का निर्माण जल के रस से हुआ. त्वष्टा देव संसार को रूप धारण कराते हैं. त्वष्टा देव मनुष्यों को देवत्व और अमरता प्रदान करते हैं. (१७)
EN English Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead created water first. After that the earth was created. This earth was formed from the juice of water. Tvashta Dev takes the form of the world. Tvashta Dev gives divinity and immortality to human beings. (17)
वेदा॒हमे॒तं पुरु॑षं म॒हान्त॑मादि॒त्यव॑र्णं॒ तम॑सः प॒रस्ता॑त् । तमे॒व वि॑दि॒त्वाति॑ मृ॒त्युमे॑ति॒ नान्यः पन्था॑ विद्य॒तेऽय॑नाय ॥ (१८)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
परम पुरुष को जानने से परम तत्त्व की प्राप्ति होती है. वह अंधकार से परे है. वह आदित्य जैसे वर्ण (रंग) का है. उस को जान कर जो मृत्यु के पथ पर जाते हैं, उन्हें उस पथ से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है. इस के अलावा मोक्ष का कोई और मार्ग नहीं है. (१८)
EN English Translation
By knowing the Supreme Man, one attains the Supreme Principle. It is beyond darkness. He is of a character (color) like Aditya. Those who go on the path of death by knowing him, they get salvation from that path. Apart from this, there is no other way of salvation. (18)
प्र॒जाप॑तिश्च॒रति॒ गर्भे॑ऽअ॒न्तरजा॑यमानो बहु॒धा वि जा॑यते । तस्य॒ योनिं॒ परि॑ पश्यन्ति॒ धीरा॒स्तस्मि॑न् ह तस्थु॒र्भुव॑नानि॒ विश्वा॑ ॥ (१९)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
प्रजापति गर्भ में संचरण करते हैं. वे अजन्मा हैं. फिर भी बहुत रूपों में प्रकट होते हैं. उन्हीं में सारे लोक स्थित हैं. धीर पुरुष उस के कारण चारों ओर देखते हैं. (१९)
EN English Translation
Prajapati transmits in the womb. They are unborn. Yet appear in many forms. All the worlds are located in them. Patient men look around because of that. (19)
यो दे॒वेभ्य॑ऽआ॒तप॑ति॒ यो दे॒वानां॑ पु॒रोहि॑तः । पूर्वो॒ यो दे॒वेभ्यो॑ जा॒तो नमो॑ रु॒चाय॒ ब्राह्म॑ये ॥ (२०)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जो सभी देवताओं में सब से पहले प्रकटे, जो तेज संपन्न हैं, उन ब्रह्म को नमस्कार है. आप देवताओं के पुरोहित हैं. आप देवताओं को प्रकाशित करने बाले हैं. (२०)
EN English Translation
Salutations to Brahman, who appeared first among all the gods, who are sharp. You are the priest of the gods. You are the ones to illuminate the gods. (20)
रु॒चं ब्रा॒ह्मं ज॒नय॑न्तो दे॒वाऽअग्रे॒ तद॑ब्रुवन् । यस्त्वै॒वं ब्रा॑ह्म॒णो वि॒द्यात् तस्य॑ दे॒वाऽअ॑स॒न् वशे॑ ॥ (२१)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जो देवताओं में अग्रणी हैं, जिन के बारे में यह कहा गया है कि वे प्रकाशमय ब्रह्म को प्रकटाते हैं, उस परम पुरुष को ब्रहाज्ञानी जानते हैं. उस परम पुरुष के वश में सारे देवता रहते हैं. (२१)
EN English Translation
Those who are the leaders among the gods, about whom it has been said that they reveal the luminous Brahman, that Supreme Man is known to the Brahman. All the gods live in the control of that Supreme Man. (21)
श्रीश्च॑ ते ल॒क्ष्मीश्च॒ पत्न्या॑वहोरा॒त्रे पा॒र्श्वे नक्ष॑त्राणि रू॒पम॒श्विनौ॒ व्यात्त॑म् । इ॒ष्णन्नि॑षाणा॒मुं म॑ऽइषाण सर्वलो॒कं म॑ऽइषाण ॥ (२२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे परम पुरुष! श्री और लक्ष्मी आप की पली हैं. दोनों भुजाएं दिन और रात हैं. नक्षत्र आप के रूप हैं. आप सब की इच्छा पूर्ति की सामर्थ्य रखते हैं. आप सभी लोकों की इच्छा पूर्ति करने की कृपा कीजिए. (२२)
EN English Translation
O Supreme Man! Shri and Lakshmi are your elders. Both arms are day and night. Nakshatras are the form of you. You have the ability to fulfill everyone's wishes. Please fulfill the wishes of all of you worlds. (22)
