यस्मि॑न्वृ॒क्षे सु॑पला॒शे दे॒वैः स॒म्पिब॑ते य॒मः । अत्रा॑ नो वि॒श्पतिः॑ पि॒ता पु॑रा॒णाँ अनु॑ वेनति ॥ (१)

नचिकेता ने कहा—“जिस सुंदर पत्तों वाले वृक्ष पर यम देवों के साथ भोग करते हैं, प्रजाओं के पति हमारे पिता की इच्छा है कि मैं उसी वृक्ष पर जाकर अपने पूर्वजों से मिलूं, (१)
EN English Translation
Nachiketa said, "The beautiful leaf tree on which Yama enjoys with the gods, it is the desire of our father, the husbands of the people, that I should go to the same tree and meet my forefathers, (1)
पु॒रा॒णाँ अ॑नु॒वेन॑न्तं॒ चर॑न्तं पा॒पया॑मु॒या । अ॒सू॒यन्न॒भ्य॑चाकशं॒ तस्मा॑ अस्पृहयं॒ पुनः॑ ॥ (२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
मेरे पिता ने निर्दयतापूर्वक आज्ञा दी कि मैं अपने पूर्वजों का साथी बनू, मैंने निंदापूर्वक उनकी ओर देखा. अब मैं उनके प्रति अनुराग रखता हूं.” (२)
EN English Translation
My father cruelly commanded that I be the companion of my ancestors, I looked at him with condemnation. Now I have a love for them." (2)
यं कु॑मार॒ नवं॒ रथ॑मच॒क्रं मन॒साकृ॑णोः । एके॑षं वि॒श्वतः॒ प्राञ्च॒मप॑श्य॒न्नधि॑ तिष्ठसि ॥ (३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
यम ने कहा-“हे कुमार नचिकेता! तुमने अपने ही मन से बिना पहियों वाला, एक दंड वाला, सब ओर जाने वाला व नवीन रथ चाहा था. बिना विचारे ही तुम उस पर बैठ गए हो. (३)
EN English Translation
Yama said, "O Kumar Nachiketa! You wanted a chariot with no wheels, with a rod, going all the way and a new chariot with your own mind. You've sat on it without thinking. (3)
यं कु॑मार॒ प्राव॑र्तयो॒ रथं॒ विप्रे॑भ्य॒स्परि॑ । तं सामानु॒ प्राव॑र्तत॒ समि॒तो ना॒व्याहि॑तम् ॥ (४)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे कुमार नचिकेता! तुमने मेधावियों से ऊपर आकाश में उस रथ को चलाया है. तुमने उस रथ को पिता की सलाह के अनुसार चलाया है. तुम्हारे पिता की उपदेश रूपी नौका पर चढ़ कर यह रथ यहां आया है.” (४)
EN English Translation
O Kumar Nachiketa! You have driven that chariot in the sky above the meritorious. You have driven that chariot according to the father's advice. This chariot has come here on your father's prophetic boat." (4)
कः कु॑मा॒रम॑जनय॒द्रथं॒ को निर॑वर्तयत् । कः स्वि॒त्तद॒द्य नो॑ ब्रूयादनु॒देयी॒ यथाभ॑वत् ॥ (५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
“इस बालक को किसने जन्म दिया एवं इस रथ को किसने यहां भेजा?” आज मुझे यह बात कौन बताएगा कि इसे किस प्रकार उपदेश देकर लौटाया जाए? (५)
EN English Translation
"Who gave birth to this child and who sent this chariot here?" Who will tell me today how to return it with a sermon? (5)
यथाभ॑वदनु॒देयी॒ ततो॒ अग्र॑मजायत । पु॒रस्ता॑द्बु॒ध्न आत॑तः प॒श्चान्नि॒रय॑णं कृ॒तम् ॥ (६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
यह बालक जिस बात को सुनकर जीवलोक में लौटेगा, वह इसे पहले ही बता दी गई थी. पहले यम के घर जाने का पिता का आदेश हुआ. इसके बाद लौटने का आधार बताया गया.” (६)
EN English Translation
What this child will hear and return to the living world was already told to it. First the father's order to go to Yama's house was done. After that, the condition of returning was given." (6)
इ॒दं य॒मस्य॒ साद॑नं देवमा॒नं यदु॒च्यते॑ । इ॒यम॑स्य धम्यते ना॒ळीर॒यं गी॒र्भिः परि॑ष्कृतः ॥ (७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
यम का यही निवासस्थान देवों द्वारा निर्मित बताया जाता है. यम की प्रसन्नता के लिए यह बांसुरी बजाई जाती है और इसे स्तुतियों से सुशोभित किया जाता है. (७)
EN English Translation
This abode of Yama is said to be built by the devas. This flute is played for yama's delight and it is beautified with praises. (7)
