वे॒दि॒षदे॑ प्रि॒यधा॑माय सु॒द्युते॑ धा॒सिमि॑व॒ प्र भ॑रा॒ योनि॑म॒ग्नये॑ । वस्त्रे॑णेव वासया॒ मन्म॑ना॒ शुचिं॑ ज्यो॒तीर॑थं शु॒क्रव॑र्णं तमो॒हन॑म् ॥ (१)

हे अध्वर्यु! यज्ञवेदी पर विराजने वाले, अपने स्थान को प्रेम करने वाले एवं शोभन प्रकाशयुक्त अग्नि के लिए हव्य अन्न के समान वेदीरूपी स्थान तैयार करो. उस शुद्ध, प्रकाशयुक्त, दीप्तवर्ण एवं अंधकारनाशक स्थान को सुंदर कुशों से इस प्रकार ढक दो, जिस प्रकार किसी को कपड़े से ढका जाता है. (१)
EN English Translation
O adhwaryu! Prepare an altarlike place like a living food for those who dwell on the yagna-vedi, who love your place and the fire with a bright light. Cover that pure, light-lit, bright and dark spot with beautiful kushas in such a way as one is covered with a cloth. (1)
अ॒भि द्वि॒जन्मा॑ त्रि॒वृदन्न॑मृज्यते संवत्स॒रे वा॑वृधे ज॒ग्धमी॒ पुनः॑ । अ॒न्यस्या॒सा जि॒ह्वया॒ जेन्यो॒ वृषा॒ न्य१॒॑न्येन॑ व॒निनो॑ मृष्ट वार॒णः ॥ (२)

द्विजन्मा अग्नि, आज्य, पुरोडाश एवं सोम नामक तीन भाइयों को सामने आकर खाते हैं. अग्नि द्वारा भक्षित धान्य एक वर्ष में बढ़ जाता है. कामवर्षी अग्नि एक रूप से मुख एवं जिह्वा द्वारा बढ़ते हैं एवं दूसरे दावाग्नि रूप से सबको अपने से दूर हटाते हुए वनों को जलाते हैं. (२)
EN English Translation
The two-birth mother comes forward and eats three brothers named Agni, Ajya, Purodash and Soma. The grain consumed by fire increases in one year. The working fires grow in one form by the mouth and tongue and the other by burning the forests by removing everyone from them in a wild way. (2)
कृ॒ष्ण॒प्रुतौ॑ वेवि॒जे अ॑स्य स॒क्षिता॑ उ॒भा त॑रेते अ॒भि मा॒तरा॒ शिशु॑म् । प्रा॒चाजि॑ह्वं ध्व॒सय॑न्तं तृषु॒च्युत॒मा साच्यं॒ कुप॑यं॒ वर्ध॑नं पि॒तुः ॥ (३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
अग्नि की माता के समान काले दोनों काष्ठ जलते हैं एवं समान कार्य करते हुए अग्नि को उस प्रकार प्राप्त करते हैं, जिस प्रकार माता शिशु को. वह शिशु रूप अग्ने पूर्वाभिमुख, जिह्वा वाला, तम विनाशक, शीघ्र उत्पन्न काष्ठ से शनै:-शनैः मिलने वाला, रक्षणीय एवं पालक यजमान का वर्द्धक है. (३)
EN English Translation
Like the mother of fire, both the woods burn and do the same work and get the fire in the same way as the mother and the baby. The infant form is facing east, tongue-in-cheek, most destructive, quick-to-produce wood. (3)
मु॒मु॒क्ष्वो॒३॒॑ मन॑वे मानवस्य॒ते र॑घु॒द्रुवः॑ कृ॒ष्णसी॑तास ऊ॒ जुवः॑ । अ॒स॒म॒ना अ॑जि॒रासो॑ रघु॒ष्यदो॒ वात॑जूता॒ उप॑ युज्यन्त आ॒शवः॑ ॥ (४)

अग्निज्वालाएं मोक्षदायक, शीघ्रगामिनी, काले मार्ग वाली, शीघ्रकारिणी, भिन्नवर्ण वाली, गमनशील, शीघ्र कंपित होनेवाली, हवा के द्वारा प्रेरित, व्याप्तिपूर्ण, मननशील एवं यजमान के लिए उपयोगी हैं. (४)
EN English Translation
The firejwalas are liberating, quick-garamini, dark-headed, quick-doer, differently-colored, moving, quick-quivering, wind-induced, pervasive, contemplative and useful for host. (4)
आद॑स्य॒ ते ध्व॒सय॑न्तो॒ वृथे॑रते कृ॒ष्णमभ्वं॒ महि॒ वर्पः॒ करि॑क्रतः । यत्सीं॑ म॒हीम॒वनिं॒ प्राभि मर्मृ॑शदभिश्व॒सन्स्त॒नय॒न्नेति॒ नान॑दत् ॥ (५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
जिस प्रकार अग्नि सब ओर चेष्टा और शब्द करते हुए तथा अत्यंत गरजते हुए महती भूमि का बार-बार स्पर्श करते हैं, उस समय इनकी चिनगारियां अंधकार का विनाश करती हुई एवं काले रंग के गमन मार्ग को प्रकाश से भरती हुई सब ओर जाती हैं. (५)
EN English Translation
Just as the fire touches the great land repeatedly, making gestures and words all around and with the most thundering, at that time their sparks go all the way, destroying the darkness and filling the dark path with light. (5)
भूष॒न्न योऽधि॑ ब॒भ्रूषु॒ नम्न॑ते॒ वृषे॑व॒ पत्नी॑र॒भ्ये॑ति॒ रोरु॑वत् । ओ॒जा॒यमा॑नस्त॒न्व॑श्च शुम्भते भी॒मो न शृङ्गा॑ दविधाव दु॒र्गृभिः॑ ॥ (६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
अग्नि पीले रंग की लकड़ियों को अलंकृत करते हुए उन में प्रवेश करते हैं. जिस तरह बैल गायों की ओर दौड़ता है, उसी प्रकार अग्नि महान् शब्द करते हुए उन लकड़ियों की ओर चारों तरफ से जाते हैं. वे बलप्रर्दशन सा करते हुए अपनी ज्वालाएं दीप्त करते हैं. जिस प्रकार न तु पकडा जा सकने वाला भयंकर पशु सींग घुमाता है, उसी प्रकार अग्नि ज्वालाओं को चलाते हैं. (६)
EN English Translation
Fire enters them by decorating yellow wood. Just as the bull runs towards the cows, in the same way, the agni goes from all sides towards those woods, saying great words. They light their flames while doing balpradshan. Just as a fierce animal that cannot be caught turns horns, so agnis drive flames. (6)
स सं॒स्तिरो॑ वि॒ष्टिरः॒ सं गृ॑भायति जा॒नन्ने॒व जा॑न॒तीर्नित्य॒ आ श॑ये । पुन॑र्वर्धन्ते॒ अपि॑ यन्ति दे॒व्य॑म॒न्यद्वर्पः॑ पि॒त्रोः कृ॑ण्वते॒ सचा॑ ॥ (७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
अग्नि कभी प्रच्छन्न और कभी विस्तृत होकर लकड़ियों में व्याप्त होते हैं. यजमान का अभिप्राय जानने वाले अग्नि अपनी उन ज्वालाओं का आश्रय लेते हैं जो यजमान की इच्छाओं को जानती हैं. ऐसी ज्वालाएं बार-बार बढ़कर दिव्य अग्नि को प्राप्त होती हैं एवं अग्नि के साथ ही धरती और आकाश का रूप तेजोमय बना देती हैं. (७)
EN English Translation
Fire is sometimes hidden and sometimes spread out in wood. The fires that know the meaning of the host take refuge in the flames that know the wishes of the host. Such flames increase again and again to attain divine fire and along with the fire, they make the form of the earth and the sky bright. (7)
तम॒ग्रुवः॑ के॒शिनीः॒ सं हि रे॑भि॒र ऊ॒र्ध्वास्त॑स्थुर्म॒म्रुषीः॒ प्रायवे॒ पुनः॑ । तासां॑ ज॒रां प्र॑मु॒ञ्चन्ने॑ति॒ नान॑द॒दसुं॒ परं॑ ज॒नय॑ञ्जी॒वमस्तृ॑तम् ॥ (८)

आगे स्थित केशों के समान ज्वालाएं अग्नि का आलिंगन करती हैं. ज्वालाएं मरी हुई होने पर भी आने वाले अग्ने के स्वागत के लिए ऊपर उठती हैं, अग्नि ऐसी शिखाओं का बुढ़ापा दूर करके उन्हें अतिशय शक्तिशाली एवं प्राणधारण के योग्य बनाते हुए बार-बार गर्जन करते हैं. (८)
EN English Translation
The flames like the hairs located in the front embrace the fire. Even when the flames are dead, they rise up to welcome the incoming agne, the fires roar again and again, removing the old age of such crests and making them very powerful and worthy of life. (8)
अ॒धी॒वा॒सं परि॑ मा॒तू रि॒हन्नह॑ तुवि॒ग्रेभिः॒ सत्व॑भिर्याति॒ वि ज्रयः॑ । वयो॒ दध॑त्प॒द्वते॒ रेरि॑ह॒त्सदानु॒ श्येनी॑ सचते वर्त॒नीरह॑ ॥ (९)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
यह अग्नि धरती माता को वस्त्रों के समान ढकने वाली झाड़ियों को चारों ओर से चाटते हुए महान् शब्द करने वाले प्राणियों के साथ तेजी से भांति-भांति का गमन करते हैं. वह चरणों वाले अर्थात् मनुष्यों और पशुओं को खाने की वस्तुएं देते तथा तृणादि को जलाते हुए उस स्थान को काला कर देते हैं, जिससे चलकर आते हैं. (९)
EN English Translation
This fire moves rapidly with the creatures who make great words, licking the bushes that cover mother earth like clothes from all sides. He gives food items to the feet, that is, humans and animals, and blackens the place from which he walks, by burning the triendi. (9)
अ॒स्माक॑मग्ने म॒घव॑त्सु दीदि॒ह्यध॒ श्वसी॑वान्वृष॒भो दमू॑नाः । अ॒वास्या॒ शिशु॑मतीरदीदे॒र्वर्मे॑व यु॒त्सु प॑रि॒जर्भु॑राणः ॥ (१०)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे अग्नि! तुम हमारे धनसंपन्न घरों में प्रज्वलित होओ. इसके पश्चात् तुम कामवर्षी एवं दानाभिलाषी होकर ज्वाला रूपी सांसें इधर-उधर छोड़ते हुए बच्चों जैसी चंचल बुद्धि त्याग दो एवं संग्राम में कवच के समान शत्रुओं से बार-बार हमारी रक्षा करते हुए जल उठो. (१०)
EN English Translation
O fire! You are ignited in our wealthy houses. After this, you, being a workman and a daint, giving up the breath of flame, giving up the fickle intellect like children and get up in the war, protecting us from enemies again and again, like armor. (10)
इ॒दम॑ग्ने॒ सुधि॑तं॒ दुर्धि॑ता॒दधि॑ प्रि॒यादु॑ चि॒न्मन्म॑नः॒ प्रेयो॑ अस्तु ते । यत्ते॑ शु॒क्रं त॒न्वो॒३॒॑ रोच॑ते॒ शुचि॒ तेना॒स्मभ्यं॑ वनसे॒ रत्न॒मा त्वम् ॥ (११)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे अग्नि! कठोर काठ के ऊपर रखा हुआ जो हवि तुम्हें भली प्रकार दिया गया है, वह तुम्हें प्रिय वस्तु से भी अधिक प्रिय हो. तुम्हारे ज्वालारूपी शरीर से जो भी तेज प्रकाशित होता है, उसके साथ-साथ हमारे लिए रत्न दो. (११)
EN English Translation
O agni! The havi placed on the hard wood that has been given to you well is dearer than what is dear to you. Whatever brightness is illuminated by your flame-like body, give gems for us. (11)
रथा॑य॒ नाव॑मु॒त नो॑ गृ॒हाय॒ नित्या॑रित्रां प॒द्वतीं॑ रास्यग्ने । अ॒स्माकं॑ वी॒राँ उ॒त नो॑ म॒घोनो॒ जना॑ँश्च॒ या पा॒रया॒च्छर्म॒ या च॑ ॥ (१२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे अग्नि! हमारे गमनशील यजमान को संसार से पार उतारने वाली यज्ञ रूपी नाव दो. ऋत्विज् उसके डांड एवं मंत्र उसके चरण हैं. वह हमारे वीर पुत्रों एवं संपत्तिशाली लोगों को पार लगाएगी तथा कल्याण करेगी. (१२)
EN English Translation
O agni! Give our gaming host a yagna boat that crosses the world. Ritvij is his dand and mantra is his feet. It will surpass and welfare our brave sons and wealthy people. (12)
अ॒भी नो॑ अग्न उ॒क्थमिज्जु॑गुर्या॒ द्यावा॒क्षामा॒ सिन्ध॑वश्च॒ स्वगू॑र्ताः । गव्यं॒ यव्यं॒ यन्तो॑ दी॒र्घाहेषं॒ वर॑मरु॒ण्यो॑ वरन्त ॥ (१३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे अग्नि! हमारे मंत्रों को प्रोत्साहित करो. धरती, आकाश एवं स्वयं बहने वाली नदियां हमें घी, दूध, जौ, गेहूं आदि देकर प्रोत्साहित करें. लाल रंग वाली उषाएं हमें सदा उत्तम अन्न दें. (१३)
EN English Translation
O fire! Encourage our mantras. Let the earth, sky and self-flowing rivers encourage us by giving us ghee, milk, barley, wheat, etc. May the red-colored ushas always give us the best food. (13)
