Mandal 4 • Sukta 18
अ॒यं पन्था॒ अनु॑वित्तः पुरा॒णो यतो॑ दे॒वा उ॒दजा॑यन्त॒ विश्वे॑ । अत॑श्चि॒दा ज॑निषीष्ट॒ प्रवृ॑द्धो॒ मा मा॒तर॑ममु॒या पत्त॑वे कः ॥ (१)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
इंद्र बोले-“योनि से जन्म लेने का मार्ग परंपरागत एवं सनातन है. समस्त देव एवं मनुष्य उसी मार्ग से निकले हैं. गर्भ में वृद्धि प्राप्त करने वाले तुम भी इसी मार्ग से जन्म लो. दूसरा मार्ग अपना कर माता की मृत्यु का काम मत करो.” (१)
EN English Translation
Indra said, "The path to being born vaginally is traditional and eternal. All devas and human beings have gone out of that path. Those who get growth in the womb, you also get birth by this path. Don't take the other path and don't make your mother suffer." (1)
नाहमतो॒ निर॑या दु॒र्गहै॒तत्ति॑र॒श्चता॑ पा॒र्श्वान्निर्ग॑माणि । ब॒हूनि॑ मे॒ अकृ॑ता॒ कर्त्वा॑नि॒ युध्यै॑ त्वेन॒ सं त्वे॑न पृच्छै ॥ (२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
वामदेव ने कहा-“हम इस दुर्गम योनि-मार्ग से जन्म नहीं लेंगे. हम तिरछे होकर बगल से निकलेंगे. हमें बहुत से बिना किए हुए काम करने हैं-किसी के साथ युद्ध एवं किसी के साथ वादविवाद.” (२)
EN English Translation
Vamdev said, "We will not be born through this inaccessible vagina. We'll get out of the side diagonally. We have a lot of things to do without doing it – war with someone and a debate with someone." (2)
प॒रा॒य॒तीं मा॒तर॒मन्व॑चष्ट॒ न नानु॑ गा॒न्यनु॒ नू ग॑मानि । त्वष्टु॑र्गृ॒हे अ॑पिब॒त्सोम॒मिन्द्रः॑ शतध॒न्यं॑ च॒म्वोः॑ सु॒तस्य॑ ॥ (३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
इंद्र बोले-“यदि हम पुरातन योनि-मार्ग से नहीं निकलेंगे तो हमारी माता मर जाएगी. इस प्रकार हम शीघ्र बाहर निकलेंगे. वामदेव कहने लगे-“इंद्र ने त्वष्टा के घर में पत्थरों द्वारा निचोड़े गए एवं सैकड़ों रत्नों के मूल्य वाले सोमरस को पिया.” (३)
EN English Translation
Indra said, "If we do not go out of the vagina, which is the tradition, our mother will die." That's how we'll get out soon. Vamdev began to say, "Indra drank the somras in the house of Tvashta, which was squeezed by stones and worth hundreds of ratnas." (3)
किं स ऋध॑क्कृणव॒द्यं स॒हस्रं॑ मा॒सो ज॒भार॑ श॒रद॑श्च पू॒र्वीः । न॒ही न्व॑स्य प्रति॒मान॒मस्त्य॒न्तर्जा॒तेषू॒त ये जनि॑त्वाः ॥ (४)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
“अदिति इंद्र को सैकड़ों मासों और वर्षों तक गर्भ में रखे रही. इंद्र ने यह नियम के प्रतिकूल कार्य क्यों किया?” इसे सुनकर अदिति ने उत्तर दिया-“हे वामदेव! जो लोग उत्पन्न हो चुके हैं अथवा भविष्य में होंगे, उन में से किसी के भी साथ इंद्र की समानता नहीं हो सकती.” (४)
EN English Translation
"Aditi kept Indra in the womb for hundreds of months and years. Why did Indra do this contrary to the rule?" On hearing this, Aditi replied, "O Vamdev! Indra cannot have the sameness with any of those who have been born or will be born in the future." (4)
अ॒व॒द्यमि॑व॒ मन्य॑माना॒ गुहा॑क॒रिन्द्रं॑ मा॒ता वी॒र्ये॑णा॒ न्यृ॑ष्टम् । अथोद॑स्थात्स्व॒यमत्कं॒ वसा॑न॒ आ रोद॑सी अपृणा॒ज्जाय॑मानः ॥ (५)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
अंधेरे सूतिका घर में पैदा होने वाले इंद्र को निंदा के योग्य समझकर माता अदिति ने परम शक्तिशाली बना दिया. इंद्र अपने तेज को धारण करके उठ खड़े हुए और जन्म लेते ही उन्होंने धरती-आकाश को घेर लिया. (५)
EN English Translation
Mother Aditi made Indra ultimate powerful by considering Indra, who was born in the dark sutika house, to save Indra from condemnation. Indra stood up holding his brightness and as soon as he was born, he surrounded the earth and sky. (5)
ए॒ता अ॑र्षन्त्यलला॒भव॑न्तीरृ॒ताव॑रीरिव सं॒क्रोश॑मानाः । ए॒ता वि पृ॑च्छ॒ किमि॒दं भ॑नन्ति॒ कमापो॒ अद्रिं॑ परि॒धिं रु॑जन्ति ॥ (६)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
पानी से भरी हुई नदियां इस प्रकार गर्जन करती हुई बह रही हैं, जैसे इंद्र की महत्ता का घोष कर रही हैं. उनसे पूछो कि ये क्या कहती हैं? इंद्र ने जल को रोकने वाले मेघ को भेदा था. क्या वे नदियां उसी का वर्णन कर रही हैं? (६)
EN English Translation
The rivers filled with water are flowing roaring like they are proclaiming the importance of Indra. Ask them what they say? Indra had pierced the cloud that stopped the water. Are those rivers describing the same? (6)
किमु॑ ष्विदस्मै नि॒विदो॑ भन॒न्तेन्द्र॑स्याव॒द्यं दि॑धिषन्त॒ आपः॑ । ममै॒तान्पु॒त्रो म॑ह॒ता व॒धेन॑ वृ॒त्रं ज॑घ॒न्वाँ अ॑सृज॒द्वि सिन्धू॑न् ॥ (७)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
इंद्र को जो ब्रह्महत्या का पाप लगा है, उस संबंध में विद्वानों का क्या कहना है? यह पाप जल में फेन रूप से उपस्थित है. मेरे पुत्र इंद्र ने बलपूर्वक वज्र चलाकर वृत्र को मारा. इसके बाद नदियों को बहाया. (७)
EN English Translation
What do the scholars have to say about the sin of killing Indra? It is present in sinful water. My son Indra forcefully wielded a thunderbolt and killed Vritra. After that the rivers flowed. (7)
मम॑च्च॒न त्वा॑ युव॒तिः प॒रास॒ मम॑च्च॒न त्वा॑ कु॒षवा॑ ज॒गार॑ । मम॑च्चि॒दापः॒ शिश॑वे ममृड्यु॒र्मम॑च्चि॒दिन्द्रः॒ सह॒सोद॑तिष्ठत् ॥ (८)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
वामदेव कहने लगे-“हे इंद्र! मतवाली युवती माता अदिति ने तुम्हें जन्म दिया. इसी समय कुषवा नाम की राक्षसी ने मतवाली बनकर तुम्हें निगल लिया. जलों से मस्त होकर तुम्हें सुख पहुंचाया. इंद्र प्रसन्न होकर सूतिकागृह में ही उस राक्षसी को मारने लगे.” (८)
EN English Translation
Vamdev said, "O Indra! Mother Aditi gave birth to you. At the same time, a demon named Kushwaa became a matwali and swallowed you up. The water brought you happiness by being engrossed. Indra was pleased to kill the demon in the sutikagriha itself." (8)
मम॑च्च॒न ते॑ मघव॒न्व्यं॑सो निविवि॒ध्वाँ अप॒ हनू॑ ज॒घान॑ । अधा॒ निवि॑द्ध॒ उत्त॑रो बभू॒वाञ्छिरो॑ दा॒सस्य॒ सं पि॑णग्व॒धेन॑ ॥ (९)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे धन के स्वामी इंद्र! व्यंस नामक राक्षस ने मतवाला बनकर तुम पर आक्रमण किया एवं तुम्हारी नाक और ठोड़ी पर चोट की. इसके बाद तुम अधिक शक्तिशाली बन गए एवं बुमने अपने वज्र से उसका सिर काट दिया. (९)
EN English Translation
O Lord of wealth Indra! A demon named Vance attacked you as a drunkard and hit your nose and chin, after which you became more powerful and cut off his head with his thunderbolt. (9)
गृ॒ष्टिः स॑सूव॒ स्थवि॑रं तवा॒गाम॑नाधृ॒ष्यं वृ॑ष॒भं तुम्र॒मिन्द्र॑म् । अरी॑ळ्हं व॒त्सं च॒रथा॑य मा॒ता स्व॒यं गा॒तुं त॒न्व॑ इ॒च्छमा॑नम् ॥ (१०)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
एक बार ब्याई हुई गाय जिस प्रकार बछड़े को जन्म देती है, उसी प्रकार अदिति ने अपनी इच्छा से कामवर्षी एवं अजेय इंद्र को जन्म दिया. वे अधिक अवस्था वाले, बलसंपन्न, प्रेरणा करने वाले एवं चलने के लिए शरीर के इच्छुक हैं. (१०)
EN English Translation
Just as a cow once married gives birth to a calf, Aditi gave birth to a lustful and invincible Indra of her own free will. They are more stateful, forceful, inspiring and willing to move the body. (10)
उ॒त मा॒ता म॑हि॒षमन्व॑वेनद॒मी त्वा॑ जहति पुत्र दे॒वाः । अथा॑ब्रवीद्वृ॒त्रमिन्द्रो॑ हनि॒ष्यन्सखे॑ विष्णो वित॒रं वि क्र॑मस्व ॥ (११)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
माता अदिति अपने महान् पुत्र इंद्र से पूछने लगी-“हे पुत्र! ये देवगण तुम्हारा त्याग कर रहे हैं.” इसे सुनकर इंद्र ने विष्णु से कहा--“हे मित्र विष्णु! तुम पराक्रम करके वृत्र को मारो.” (११)
EN English Translation
Mother Aditi asked her great son Indra, "O son! These gods are forsaking you." On hearing this, Indra said to Vishnu, "O friend Vishnu! You mighty and kill the vrikra." (11)
कस्ते॑ मा॒तरं॑ वि॒धवा॑मचक्रच्छ॒युं कस्त्वाम॑जिघांस॒च्चर॑न्तम् । कस्ते॑ दे॒वो अधि॑ मार्डी॒क आ॑सी॒द्यत्प्राक्षि॑णाः पि॒तरं॑ पाद॒गृह्य॑ ॥ (१२)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हे इंद्र! तुम्हारी माता को विधवा किसने बनाया? तुम्हारे सोते समय तुम्हें किसने मारने की इच्छा की थी? तुम्हारी अपेक्षा सुख देने वाला देव कौन सा है? किसने तुम्हारे पिता के पैर पकड़कर उनकी हत्या की? (१२)
EN English Translation
O Indra! Who made your mother a widow? Who wanted to kill you while you were sleeping? Which is the God of happiness than you? Who grabbed your father's feet and killed him? (12)
अव॑र्त्या॒ शुन॑ आ॒न्त्राणि॑ पेचे॒ न दे॒वेषु॑ विविदे मर्डि॒तार॑म् । अप॑श्यं जा॒यामम॑हीयमाना॒मधा॑ मे श्ये॒नो मध्वा ज॑भार ॥ (१३)
हि हिन्दी अनुवाद
हमने खाने योग्य वस्तुओं के न होने पर कुत्ते की आंतों को पकाया था. उस समय कोई देव हमारी रक्षा करने वाला नहीं मिला. हम अपनी पत्नी को अपमानित होता देखते रहे. हमें केवल इंद्र ने ही आनंदित किया. (१३)
EN English Translation
We cooked the dog's intestines when there were no eatables. At that time there was no God to protect us. We watched our wife humiliated. Only Indra made us happy. (13)
