Is dietary vegetarianism mandatory in Sanatan Dharma according to original Vedic and Upanishadic texts?

There are intense online debates regarding food choices in Hinduism. While modern practice largely values Ahimsa and vegetarianism, critics often point to ancient sacrificial rituals (Yajnas). What is the scriptural stance on food, gunas (Satvik, Rajasik, Tamasik), and non-violence across Vedic literature?

Sanatan Dharma approaches food not as a dogmatic commandment, but through the foundational lens of Ahimsa (non-harming) and the three Gunas.

1. The Highest Ideal is Ahimsa:
In the Mahabharata (Anushasana Parva 115.47), it is famously declared:
"अहिंसा परमो धर्मस्तथाहिंसा परं दमः। अहिंसा परमं दानमहिंसा परमं तपः॥"
Non-violence is the supreme virtue. The Chandogya Upanishad (8.15.1) explicitly commands non-injury to all beings (*Ahimsan sarva-bhutani*).

2. Gita's Classification of Food (Chapter 17, Verses 8-10):
Satvik food (pure, fresh, plant-based, wholesome) promotes clarity of consciousness, vitality, and spiritual evolution. Heavy and flesh-based foods promote Rajas (restlessness) and Tamas (inertia).

Thus, while regional and historical exceptions existed for warriors and specific geographies, vegetarianism is indisputably the highest spiritual ideal for spiritual seekers.

Historically, India's shift towards widespread lacto-vegetarianism was an ethical evolution driven by the Upanishads, Jainism, Buddhism, and Vaishnavism, emphasizing that one cannot attain inner peace while inflicting terror on fellow sentient creatures.
