Why did Rama send Sita to the forest according to Uttara Kanda? Is Uttara Kanda an authentic part of Valmiki Ramayana or a later interpolation?

One of the most emotionally charged questions raised against Shri Rama on social media is regarding the abandonment of Devi Sita (Sita Tyaga) in the Uttara Kanda.

Did this event truly occur in the original epic, or do textual critics and traditional acharyas consider the Uttara Kanda to be a later addition (Prakshepa)? What do classical commentaries tell us?

This is one of the most critical textual questions in Indology. Multiple linguistic and manuscript traditions show strong evidence that Uttara Kanda is a later interpolation (Prakshepa):

1. Internal Phalasruti of Yuddha Kanda:
At the conclusion of the 6th book (Yuddha Kanda, Sarga 128), Maharshi Valmiki explicitly concludes the Ramayana with the traditional concluding verses (*Phalasruti*), stating that Rama ruled happily with Sita for thousands of years in Ayodhya. An epic never places its conclusion before an entire additional book unless that book was appended later.

2. Linguistic Style & Metrics:
The vocabulary, meter, and style of Uttara Kanda differ noticeably from the pristine classical Anushtup meter of the earlier six Kandas.

3. Even within Uttara Kanda narrative:
Rama as a constitutional King (*Raja Dharma*) was bound by the public scrutiny of his citizens. Rama himself was entirely convinced of Sita's purity and never remarried, keeping a golden murti of Sita by his side for the Ashvamedha Yajna. Thus, viewing Rama through a modern individualistic lens ignores both textual history and ancient constitutional Rajadharma.

Bhavabhuti in his celebrated Sanskrit drama Uttararamacharita wrote the famous line: "वज्रादपि कठोराणि मृदूनि कुसुमादपि" — Rama's heart was softer than a flower for Sita, but harder than a thunderbolt when it came to his duty as a monarch. The tragedy was Rama's own deepest personal suffering.

A king sacrificing his personal family life because of public gossip is the exact opposite of tyranny; it was an extreme sacrifice of personal happiness for constitutional duty. Both textual evidence and ethical context refute the shallow attacks seen on modern social platforms.
